Speaking simply from experience (im a mechanic up here in canada):if it asks for mercon, its gets merconif it asks for mercon V, thats what it getsif it asks for mercon SP. See a pattern?what ever it says on the dipstick, is what is best for it.
Its kinda just a CYA (cover your ass) for us mechanics to avoid comebacks. That being said, i am a firm beleiver in synthetics, and i run full synth in EVERYTHING. You can get synthetic mercon (i think mobil. Might be wrong) thats what i am running.
I wouldnt mess around too much with mixing mercon and mercon V in trannys. Just my 2 cents. From what I know about transmission rebuilds (I don't rebuild them, I just have a few), Transmission can be rebuilt and then will want a different fluid. The c6 in our 78 e-250 came with type F stock. After the rebuild it is now designed for dextron. The clutch packs are different.I asked about mixing them before from my trans rebuild guy and he said if you put in type F in a trans that wants dextron (not completly, 1 qt by accident or for an emergency) that it would bring up the pressures in the trans mission and could make it shift very harsh. I was talking about a 700r4 at that time. Edit: forgot to say, he said just change the fluid a few times somewhat quickly (once a month etc) or flush it if you want to get it all out at once if I end up with type F in the 700r4.Mark.
